How To Relieve Headaches Naturally

By  Dr. Luke Martin, D.C.

Although headaches are brushed off to be nothing more than just a common complaint, they are a red flag and are definitely not normal. When these headaches start interfering in normal daily routines, it is normal for most people to take painkillers to mask the pain. However, long-term painkiller use can lead to other problems such as ulcers or gastric bleeding. When you take over the counter pain killers, the only thing you are doing is masking your symptoms and causing more harm to your body than good. Acetaminophen poisoning is responsible for nearly half of all acute liver failure cases in the United States. It can be toxic to your liver even at recommended doses when taken daily for just a couple of weeks. Headaches can be triggered by stress, allergies, fatigue, poor posture, low blood sugar, hormones, and nutritional deficiencies, among other things. Simple things to support a headache naturally include:

  • Keeping hydrated
  • Maintaining a healthy fat and protein source in each meal, and
  • Eating small but nourishing meals 4-6 times a day.

Meditation and breathing techniques can be very supportive of headaches as well as stress elimination. Eating a diet consisting of no processed foods and organic in nature is ideal for basic nutrition. If you find that you have tried these suggestions, there may be other underlying causes that should be explored. A great way to get started is to have a functional blood test with our clinic. Another test to look at would be hormone testing. This will give us a better understanding of your unique physiology and the hidden imbalances that can be addressed with functional medicine.
